Introduced in October 2014, the iPad Air 2 improved was a thinner, lighter, and more powerful iteration of its predecessor, the iPad Air. The most notable hardware improvements were the addition of Touch ID and an NFC chip, allowing the iPad Air 2 to support Apple Pay. It also included a new A8X processor, with 40% faster CPU performance and double the GPU performance, and an improved M8 "motion co-processor" which now added support for a new barometer sensor, which measured air pressure as a proxy for changes in altitude. Other improvements included faster Wi-Fi performance with support for the 802.11ac standard, A higher-resolution rear-facing camera with a better sensor and improved optics, and faster LTE support.

The iPad Air 2 was available in three color combinations (white/silver, white/gold, and black/space gray), in three price tiers based on storage capacity (the 128 GB model received a $100 price cut, and no 64 GB model was sold):

  • 16 GB: $499 ($629 with LTE)
  • 32 GB: $599 ($729 with LTE)
  • 128 GB: $699 ($829 with LTE)
