Introduced in September 2013 alongside the iPhone 5s, the iPhone 5c served served both tactical and strategic aims for Apple.
Tactically, the iPhone 5c allowed Apple to compete in the lower-end smartphone market with something other than the previous year's model; while the iPhone 5c was in effect a cost-reduced iPhone 5 &emdash; The only significant specification change from the iPhone 5 was the addition of support for more LTE bands, and a modest improvement to battery life &emdash; it had a fresh look: a polycarbonate case available in blue, green, pink, yellow and white. It had the luster of a new phone, and since it was specifically designed as a cost-reduction iteration on the iPhone 5, it delivered higher margins than simply selling the latter for less.
Strategically, manufacturing the iPhone 5c alongside the 5s gave Apple experience bringing two new phone models to market simultaneously, which required sophisticated logistics to respond properly to demand for each. This was, in effect, a trial run for the release of the iPhone 6 and 6 plus a year later.
The iPhone 5c was sold in all colors at two price points, based on flash capacity:
- 16 GB / $99 ($549 unsubsidized)
- 32 GB / $199 ($649 unsubsidized)
In September 2014, both models were discontinued, and an 8 GB model was introduced; it was free for carrier-subsidized customers, or $450 unsubsidized.
